Philippa Sidle is the kind of author I aspire to be. Child Play was one of the first Space:1999 stories I read which truly awakened me to the possibilities of the characters, and in particular Tony and Maya. It also had an influence on some aspects of my own stories -- A New Moon Over Bajor and my contributions to the Energized series in particular.
I envy Philippa's ability to wrench your heart out with her uncompromising realism, and then make you all the happier when things turn out all right (after a fashion, much as they do in real life). At her hands, the Alphans become real people -- flawed, prone to jealousy and irrational behaviour, but ultimately capable of great love and goodness, and able to snatch happiness from the jaws of a universe which isn't always fair. It isn't for the faint hearted, but if you like the occasional bout of gritty realism without excessive sentimentality, this story will blow you away as it did me.

This is a bit intense, but is very good indeed. The author gives great depth to the regulars and unobtrusively introduces new characters. At the same time, this story somehow retains the spirit of the series, despite the fact it this sort of story could not have been filmed as part of the series.

A wonderful follow-up to the story which introduces Nicola (though I read this one first). Long and involved, but interesting and real. Gives a sense of what it might be/have been like to not be one of the main 10 characters but rather one of the other 300!

This is a great story and I wish Philippa would write more like this one.
